Carol Jeane Behrns, age 91, of Dieterich, Illinois, passed away at 1:41 AM – Sunday, November 7, 2021, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois.
Visitation will be held at 12:30–2:00 PM – Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church (Dieterich Blacktop) Wheeler, Illinois, with services to follow, with Pastor Dean Herberts officiating. Burial will be in the St. Paul's Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Dieterich, Illinois. In loving memory of Carol, memorials may be made to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Meals on Wheels. The obituary can be viewed and condolences left at www.meyerfh.com .
Carol Jeane was born on November 18, 1929, near Montrose in Jasper County, Illinois, the daughter of Charles and Adeline Pauline (Gust) Hetzer. She married Wayne Behrns on July 2, 1950. They started their married life in Effingham and then bought a farm north of Dieterich in 1957, where they farmed and raised their family. They later moved to Dieterich, where they have resided since 1973. Wayne preceded her in death on January 21, 2019.
Carol retired from Montrose Mutual Telephone Company after 25 years of service. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where she served as former church secretary and helped with the ladies' aide.
Carol served on the initial board of the Kluthe Center in Dieterich. She and Wayne also volunteered and delivered meals on wheels for many years and were a greeter at the Cross at the Crossroads for many years.
Carol was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed playing golf and was proud of her hole in one at the Jasper County Country Club.
Carol is survived by her Children David Behrns of Dieterich, Illinois; and Nancy (Stephen) Gray of Greenville, North Carolina; Grandson Kyle (Chelsea) Gray and children Emerson and Miles of Brevard, North Carolina; Grandson Andrew (Meg) Gray and children Shepherd, Bowman and Porter of Boone, North Carolina; and Grandson Evan Gray of Charlotte, North Carolina. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Lyle Behrns of Dieterich, Illinois.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Denver Hetzer and sisters-in-law Evelyn Vail and Marian Behrns.
