Francis Eugene "Gene" Zuber, age 89, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 7:15 AM – Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Gene's life will be celebrated at 10:30 AM – Saturday, March 26, 2022, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois, with Fr. Dean Probst celebrating mass. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Ste. Marie, Illinois, with full military rites by the Jasper Post #20 American Legion. Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 PM - Friday, March 25, 2022, at the church. In loving memory of Gene, memorials may be made to the St. Thomas Catholic School. Arrangements are under the care of Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois. Condolences maybe left at www.meyerfh.com .
Francis Eugene Zuber, better known as "Gene", was born on July 21, 1932, in Jasper County, Illinois, the son of Frank A. and Bernadette Marie (Maginn) Zuber. He married Roberta J. "Bertie" Dickerson on April 19, 1958, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Ste. Marie, Illinois.
Gene graduated from Newton Community High School with the class of 1950. He served his country as a Sargent in the United States Army, during the Korean War.
Gene worked for and later owned B.B. Brummer Wholesale in Newton for 55 years.
Gene was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois. He was an active member in his community as a member of the Knights of Columbus #1704, Jasper Post #20 American Legion, Newton VFW Post #7537 and past alderman for the City of Newton. Gene was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Fighting Illini fan.
Gene enjoyed playing baseball, fast pitch softball, playing pool, golfing and simply spending time with Bertie, family and friends. When
Gene was not playing golf, he was golf ball hunter, he loved finding those that had went astray, if you received a bucket of clean balls, you knew you were special.

Wife of 63 years – Roberta Zuber of Newton, Illinois
Children – Kathy (husband Randy) Hatten of Robinson, Illinois; Rick (wife Joyce) Zuber of Newton, Illinois; Tony (wife Tammy) Zuber of Newton, Illinois
Grandchildren – Jake Zuber, Danielle Hatten, Carly Hatten, Jessica (husband Jordan) Andruch, Jenna (husband Calvin) Schnabel and Hanna Zuber
Great-Grandchildren: Peyton, Lily, Katie, Aubrey, Ocean, and 2 on the way
Siblings – Ceil (Joe) Shelley of St. Louis, Missouri; Sam Zuber of Ste. Marie, Illinois; Vinnie (wife June) Zuber of Assumption, Illinois; and Gloria Schwartz of Belleville, Illinois
Sister-in-law – Shirley Zuber of Lebanon, Illinois
Brother-in-law – Dick Dickerson of Newton, Illinois
Special family friends – Kevin and Becky Parker of Newton, Illinois
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charlie Zuber, sister Mary Zuber and Patty Gassman, parents-in-law Roy and Mabel Dickerson, brothers-in-law Chuck Dickerson, Jim Schwartz, Henry Gassman and sister-in-law Linda Zuber.
