Obituary

Herman Edward Whalen, age 81
Of Newton, IL passed away at 11:19 PM – Monday, April 29, 2013 at St. John's Hospital in
Springfield, IL.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM – Friday, May 3, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Newton, IL with Rick Britton officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton, IL. Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 PM – Thursday, May 2, 2013 at the church with Masonic rites at 7:00 PM. There will also be ½ hour before the service. In loving memory of Herman, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or donor's choice. Arrangements are under the care of the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL.

Herman was born on December 12, 1931 in Tuscola, IL the son of Scott and Sarah (Wilson) Whalen. He married Marcella Fear on September 22, 1951 in Newton, IL.
Herman worked at H.M. Crews International Harvester and later Jansen Brothers International Harvester for many years. He later retired from the Jasper County Highway Department. After hours Herman was always willing do work area farmers.
Herman was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newton; Masonic Lodge #216; Loyal Order of the Moose of Newton and then Effingham and was a Shriner. He was an avid hunter, loved to work in his garden and raising quail.

3 Children – Joyce D. (Fred) Correll of Dundas, IL
Janet A. (Chris) Yocum of Jewett, IL
Jeffrey A. (Jessie Hale) Whalen of Newton, IL
4 Sisters – Hazel Conover of Merrillville, IN
Helen Birk of Flora, IL
Hester Birch of Mattoon, IL
Henrietta (Van) Hensley of Effingham, IL
5 Grandchildren – Bill Loy, Kara Clough, Jess Burley, Scott Burley and Jennie Adam
7 Great Grandchildren – Hannah Loy, Trevor Loy, Lynn Clough, Colten Adam, Kody Loy, Emery Adam and Leon Blair.
and several nieces and nephews
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, brother Hershel Whalen, grandson Thomas Yocum and great grandson Alton Jones.
