Obituary

Imelda Gonzalez Strelka, age 79

of Newton, Illinois entered eternal life while surrounded by her family at 12:10 PM - Friday August 7, 2015 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM – Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois with Fr. Al Kemme celebrating mass. Burial will be in the New St. Peter Cemetery east of Newton, Illinois. Visitation will be held 5:00-8:00 PM – Tuesday, August 11, 2015 with a holy rosary said at 7:30 PM at the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois. In loving memory of Imelda, memorials may be made to St. Thomas Catholic School in Newton, Illinois.

Imelda was born on November 10, 1935 in the state of Zacatecas in the country of Mexico, she was the daughter of Ismael Gonzalez and Herminia Romero Gonzalez. Upon her work travels in Chicago, she met United States Air Force airman George Leopold Strelka and courted back and forth from Mexico and the United States. They were united in marriage on June 16, 1965 in Torreon, Mexico. They resided on their farm near Yale in Jasper County Illinois until George's death on June 22, 1998.

Imelda was a prestigious, elegant, kind and giving city lady that transpired to a classy, wonderful, giving country lady. She enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, especially preparing and cooking her special Mexican dishes. Her passion of life was her husband, daughters and most of all her grandchildren.
Imelda was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and the Jasper County Home Extension. She loved to garden, crochet and play cards

Imelda is survived by her three daughters, Maria (David) Reis of Ste. Marie, Illinois; Janet (fiancé Jim McHugh) McDaniel of Effingham, Illinois and Gina Westray of Newton, Illinois; one sister BiBi VanArnam of Newton, Illinois; four grandchildren Alexandria McDaniel, Nicholas Reis, Brianna McDaniel and Adriana Reis; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband George, two sisters, and four brothers.
