Jackie Wayne "Jack" Steinman, age 73, of Willow Hill, Illinois, passed away at 6:00 PM – Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at his home.
Funeral services celebrating Jack's life will be held at 4:00 PM – Sunday, July 23, 2023, at the Potter's House Ministry, 1 Kennedy Drive, Newton, Illinois 62448. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM – Sunday, July 23, 2023, at the church. In loving memory of Jack, memorials may be given to the Family Life Center, 301 South Jackson Street, Newton, Illinois 62448. Jackie Wayne, better known as "Jack," was born on December 8, 1949, in Hardinville, Illinois, the son of Joseph Henry and Rosa Ellen (Rich) Steinman. He married Sandy Staley on August 24, 1978.
Jack graduated from Newton Community High School with the Class of 1968.
Jack served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He entered the service on May 29, 1968, and was honorably discharged on March 15, 1971. During his tour in Vietnam, Jack was awarded many medals for his heroic actions during the War. Those include the following, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal w/ 1 Bronze Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Air Medal/ Numeral 6, Army Commendation Medal w/3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and w/1 Letter "V" Device, Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Letter "V", National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/1 Bronze Service Star and w/ 1 Silver Service Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal/ Ribbon w/ Device (1960), Sharpshooter Badge w/ Auto Rifle Bar and w/ Rifle Bar, Civil Action Honor Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/PHLM.
Jack retired from the Jasper County Unit No 1 School system, after 20 years of service as a custodian and bus driver at the Willow Hill Elementary School.
Jack was a member of the Potter's House Ministry and the life member of the VFW Post #1769 in Effingham. He enjoyed dancing, mushroom hunting, grilling, and spending time with family and friends.
Jack is survived by:
Wife of 44 years – Sandy Steinman of Willow Hill, Illinois
Daughters – Sandra "Sam" (Mike) Hires of Willow Hill, Illinois; Jackie (Jeremy) Smock of Newton, Illinois; and Peggy (Ben) Stodden of Neoga, Illinois
Brothers – Dick (Carol) Steinman of Olney, Illinois; and Sam (Brenda) Steinman of Atlanta, Georgia
Mother-in-law – Leda Short of Willow Hill, Illinois
16 Grandchildren
11 Great Grandchildren
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, son David Childress, brothers Randy Steinman and Dannie Steinman.
