Jennifer Sue Johnson Hawes, age 73

August 6, 1948 – November 17, 2021

Jennifer Sue Johnson Hawes, age 73, of Effingham and formerly of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 2:10 PM – Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM (Noon) – Saturday, November 20, 2021, at the Meyer Funeral Home in Dieterich, Illinois, with Mike Knepper officiating.  Burial will be in the Trexler Cemetery in rural Newton, Illinois.  Visitation will be held 2 hours before the service.  In loving memory of Jennifer, memorials may be made to the family.

Jennifer was born on August 6, 1948, in Effingham, Illinois, the daughter of Lon and May (Newkirk) Loy.  She married Merrill Dean Johnson on October 22, 1965, in Newton, Illinois, and he preceded her in death on August 1, 1985.

Jennifer worked as a caregiver for over 20 years and at United Technologies in Newton for a few years.

Jennifer was a member of the Central Christian Church in Newton.  She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, crafting and gardening.

Jennifer took pride in caring of her granddaughter Alexis, and was dedicated to her family.

Jennifer is survived by:

Children – Jeffrey Johnson of Oblong, Illinois; Kendall (Leasa) Johnson of Newton, Illinois; and Staci (John) Hopkins of Effingham, Illinois

Grandchildren – Alexis Hopkins, Emilee (Caleb) Chesnut, Darvin York and Jaci York

Great Grandson – Elijah York

Siblings – Floyd Loy of St. Elmo, Illinois; Wilma Shamhart of Wheeler, Illinois; Phyllis Roop of Watson, Illinois; Lois Edmond of Osseo, Michigan; Lonnie Loy of Montrose, Illinois; Gary Loy of Altamont, Illinois; Vernon Loy of Aurora, Colorado; and Donnie Loy of Effingham, Illinois

Jennifer was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter-in-law Laura Johnson on November 8, 2021.
