Jerry L. Goebel, age 79
September 24, 1946 – July 24, 2026
Jerry L. Goebel, age 79, of Lexington, Kentucky, and formerly of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 2:26 PM on Friday, July 24, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family.
A service celebrating Jerry’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday August 29, 2026, at the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois, with Scott Brown and Ron Payne officiating. Military honors given by the Jasper Post #20 American Legion will follow the service. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 AM until service time. In Loving memory of Jerry, memorials may be made to Oil Belt Christian Service Camp or the Gary Sinese Foundation. The obituary can be viewed and condolences left at www.meyerfh.com.
Jerry was born on September 24, 1946, in Effingham, Illinois, the son of Roy and Virginia Sowers Goebel. He married Loretta Sue Barbee on March 11, 1967, and she preceded him in passing on March 28, 2020. Jerry proudly served his country in the Unted States Army during Vietnam with the “Big Red One”. Upon his return to civilian life, he farmed with the Pitcher Brothers and later owned his own farm near Louisville, Illinois. After leaving the farming industry he went to farrier school. He learned how to shoe horses and later horse dentistry. He started in Illinois and would eventually travel to New York, Pennsylvania, Florida and Kentucky, where they would eventually retire. After almost 30 years, he would retire from caring for horses and went to work as a door greeter at Walmart until Sue’s passing.
He loved spending time with family and friends, watching sports and rooting for his favorite teams. Most of all he loved to serve his Lord and Savior.
Jerry is survived by
Daughters - Shelli Hopper and Shauna Wing both of Lexington, Kentucky; and Annette Davis (Brett) Carachi of Allenford, Ontario, Canada Granddaughter - Kaylee (Josh) Chavez-Quiroz Great-grandson Jerry Patrick Chavez-Quiroz of Lexington, Kentucky Brothers - Mike (Cindy) Goebel of Branson, Missouri and Chuck (Sandy) Goebel of Louden, Tennessee Sister - Christy Murphy of Lovington, Illinois Sister-in-law - Judy Goebel of Montrose, Illinois Brother-in-law - Victor Barbee and Larry (Betty) Barbee both of Louisville, Illinois As well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive.
Jerry was preceded in passing by his parents, wife, and brothers Joe Goebel and Paul Goebel.
