John Henry Smith, age 98
Of Newton, IL passed away at 8:00 AM – Friday, November 1, 2013 at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL.
Funeral Services celebrating John's life will be held at 3:00 PM- Monday, November 4, 2013 at the Falmouth Christian Chapel in Falmouth, IL with John Blackmore officiating. Visitation will be held 2 hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Chapel Cemetery with Full Military Rites by the Jasper County American Legion Post # 20. In loving memory of John, memorials may be made to the Jasper County American Legion Post #20 Christmas Fund.
Arrangements are under the care of the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL.

John was born on August 20, 1915 in Ingraham, Illinois the son of Otto and Clara (Nix) Smith.
In February 1946, he married Mittie May Brothers in Charleston, Illinois and she preceded him in death on January 12, 1996.
As a member of the United States Army John served with distinction during World War II
His military career included time as a prisoner of war and the receipt of multiple military awards.
John lived life to its fullest enjoying each day and grasping each opportunity he was given.
Over the years he worked as a trucker, in the oilfields and as a farmer.
He was known by many as the owner of S&S Auto.
John enjoyed singing, playing guitars and loved animals.
He loved his family and welcomed everyone into his home.
Everyone that met him has a "John Story" to share.
John was a member of the VFW, Jasper County American Legion Post #20, Newton Masonic Lodge #216,
a Shriner and a member of the Falmouth Christian Chapel.
John is survived by-
Great- Grandchildren Robyn Brown, Doris Feltham, Tim Blackmore, John Blackmore and Lynda Vaughn.
Many Great-Great-Grandchildren and 6 Great-Great-Great Grandchildren
Nieces & Nephews- Terry Brothers, Vickie Fuson, Bonnie Sparks, Linda Lingafelter, Kenny Smith, Paulette Ebling, Chrissy Smith Park, Judy Burnell, Mike Smith, Jeanne Wagner and Brad Smith.
Long time caregivers Marvin and Delores Blackmore.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, daughter Doris, granddaughter Barbara Jo Lambert, siblings Kenneth Smith, Frank Smith and Anna Otto and nephew Jim Smith.
