John R. Wellbaum, age 87
of Jewett, Illinois passed away at 7:05 AM – Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM – Saturday, December 12, 2015, at the Meyer Funeral Home (formerly Bishop Funeral Home) in Greenup, Illinois with Gene Creek and Cameron St.Michael officiating. Burial will be in the Jewett Cemetery in Jewett, Illinois with full military rites by the Cumberland County Veterans Association. Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM – Friday, December 11, 2015, at the funeral home. In loving memory of John, memorials may be made to Lincolnland Hospice.
John was born on December 25, 1927, in rural Jewett, Illinois, the son of Oscar and Ruth (Trostle) Wellbaum. He married Betty June Webb on June 19, 1955, at the Harmon United Methodist Church in rural Jewett, Illinois.
John graduated from Newton Community High School with the Class of 1945. He then served his country in the United States Army from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1955.
John worked at Young Radiator in Mattoon, Illinois for over 30 years. He also worked at Sam's welding shop in Newton and World Color Press in Effingham, Illinois. For several years John farmed with his father-in-law.
John was a member of the Harmon United Methodist Church in rural Jewett, Illinois. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking, traveling, feeding the birds and keeping his equipment clean and well maintained.
John is survived by: Wife of 60 years – Betty Wellbaum of Jewett, Illinois
4 Children – Jeff (Tammie) Wellbaum of Atlanta, Georgia; Greg Wellbaum of Jewett, Illinois; Lisa (Craig) Koester of Mattoon, Illinois and Gary (Jennifer) Wellbaum of Ramsey, Illinois.
7 Grandchildren – Emily and Andrew Wellbaum; Abby and Nathan Koester; Lacey Edwards, Faith and Hannah Wellbaum.
3 Great Grandchildren – Maverick, Kaelin and Carson Edwards.
2 Brothers – George (Shirley) Wellbaum of Greenup, Illinois and Carl (Vickie) Wellbaum of Jewett, Illinois
3 Sisters – Virginia Titus of Toledo, Illinois; Lanora (Darrell) Quick of Jewett, Illinois and Diana Lewis of Greenup, Illinois.
John was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers Warren, Lowell and Hugh Wellbaum.
