Leona Marie (Kocher) Schafer, age 69

Leona Marie (Kocher) Schafer, age 69, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 4:49 AM – Thursday, June 10, 2021, at HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois.

Funeral services celebrating Leona's life will be held at 10:30 AM – Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois, with Kevin Colclasure officiating.  Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Newton, Illinois.  Visitation will be held 1 hour before the service.  In loving memory of Leona, memorials may be made to the Scott Avenue Food Pantry or St. Thomas Church.  The obituary can be viewed and condolences left at www.meyerfh.com .

Leona was born on December 15, 1951, in Olney, Illinois the daughter of Robert and Margaret (Steber) Kocher.  She married Glen Schafer on February 16, 1974, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Stringtown, Illinois.

Leona had worked at E.R. Moore Cap and Gown Factory, The Freeze, Newton Care Center and did house cleaning.

Leona was a member of the Scott Avenue Christian Church in Newton, Illinois, and former member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton.  She enjoyed playing BINGO.

Leona is survived by:

Husband of 47 years – Glen Schafer of Newton, Illinois

Siblings – Louis Kocher of Bicknell, Indiana; Mildred (Bob) Buerster of Olney, Illinois and Bill (Bonnie) Kocher of Lawrenceville, Illinois

Several nieces, nephews also survive

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, son Colby Schafer, sister Wanda Kocher and her father-in-law and mother-in-law Merl and Opal Schafer.
