Lyle Dean Gorrell, age 87, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 3:03 PM - Saturday, March 20, 2021, at Newton Care Center in Newton, Illinois.
Military rites by the Jasper Post #20 American Legion will be held at 3:00 PM – Thursday, March 25, 2021, at the Honey Cemetery in Bogota, Illinois. Services celebrating Dean's life will follow with Brother Larry Matson officiating. In loving memory of Dean, memorials may be made to the Shriner's Hospital and can be mailed to the Gorrell Family 8090 East 600 th Avenue Newton, Illinois 62448. Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois. The obituary can be viewed and condolences left at www.meyerfh.com .
Dean was born on May 13, 1933, in Bogota, Illinois, the son of Roy and Clare Lucille (Tate) Gorrell. He married Donna Hooker on May 19, 1956, at Central Christian Church in Newton, Illinois, and she preceded him in death on November 4, 2019.
Dean served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from April 9, 1953, until his honorable discharge on April 5, 1955.
Dean was a lifelong farmer and was a meat inspector for the United States Department of Agriculture. He was a member of the Bogota Baptist Church.
Dean enjoyed training standardbred horses, horse races and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Dean is survived by:
Sons – Randy (Cindy) Gorrell of Newton, Illinois; Rick (Bev) Gorrell of Newton, Illinois and Gary (Kelly) Gorrell of Olney, Illinois
Grandchildren – Lyle Howard, Stephanie (Brent) Roberts, Jody Howard, Elaine (Glenn) Braun, Derek (Jessie) Gorrell, Jennifer Gorrell, Jenna (Lucas) Pitcher, Heather (Josh) Schulze and Logan (Miranda) Fleeharty.
Several Great Grandchildren with one on the way
Sister – Karen Callahan of Bloomington, Illinois
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter Sherry Howard, grandson Benjamin Fleeharty and his brother Glen Gorrell.
