Madonna Jean Cummins, age 89
Of Newton, Illinois passed away at 4:16 PM - Saturday, August 30, 2014
at the Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Effingham, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM – Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton, Illinois. Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM – Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at the funeral home. In loving memory of Jean, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Newton, Illinois.

Madonna Jean was born on March 13, 1925 in Mattoon, IL the daughter of Harry and Ruth (Curry) Lewis. She married Robert W. Cummins on September 13, 1947 in Carmi, Illinois and they would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in just a few days.
Jean played an active role in the publishing of the Newton Press-Mentor which she and her husband Robert owned and operated until they retired and sold the newspaper in 1987.
Jean was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton, Illinois. She enjoyed bowling and golfing, but her real passion was playing bridge and she belonged to several bridge clubs. She also enjoyed sewing in years past.

Children – Susan Whitehurst of Vacaville, California and Scott (Charlotte) Cummins
of Port St. John, Florida
Grandchildren – Shana (Erich) VanStralen of Malibu, California; Brooke (Cory) Lorenz of Denver, Colorado; Brock (Brooke) Bigard of Boulder, Colorado; Autumn Cummins of St. George's University in Grenada, West Indies and Ryan Cummins of Vista, California
Great Grandchildren – Nathan and Allison Bigard of Boulder, Colorado
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Nancy Bigard and a grandson Brandon Whitehurst.
