Mrs. Margaret M. Passalacqua, age 88


Of Newton, IL passed away at 4:14 AM – Friday, May 25, 2012 at The Villas of Hollybrook in Newton, IL.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM – Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, IL with Fr. Al Kemme celebrating mass. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Newton, IL. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:00 AM – Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL. Margaret was born on June 13, 1923 in Jasper County, IL the daughter of Omer J. and Mary (Grager) Bergbower. She married Anthony S. Passalacqua in January 1943 and he preceded her in death in August 1964.
Margaret graduated from Newton Community High School in 1941 and graduated from Sparks Business College in December 1941.

Margaret worked for Pure Oil Company at the West Liberty Camp and she worked at E.R. Moore in Newton for 18 years. Later she worked for the Jasper County Senior Citizens Center doing information and referral work. She helped many people with insurance problems.


In 1965 Margaret started working for the Flagg Funeral Home in Newton now known as Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home as a greeter and assistant a position that she held for almost 40 years.
Margaret was involved with a dozen other women to help form Heartland Hospice in 1982 and later was taken over by Lincolnland Hospice. She also helped start the SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program).

Margaret was a lifelong member of the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton and a member of the St. Thomas Altar Society.


Margaret loved flowers and was well known for her roses and geraniums that she raised every year.
Margaret is survived by:

Daughter and Son-in-Law – DeAnn (husband Larry) Scott of Newton, IL

Grandson and Granddaughter-in-Law – Brad (wife Linda) Scott of Newton, IL

Great Grandsons – Brandon and Trevor Scott both of Newton, IL


Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Leonard "Berkie" Bergbower and an infant sister.
