Marie was born May 13, 1918 in Jasper County. She was the daughter of Ellis and Ethel (Carter) Woods.
Marie worked in a watch factory/turned airplane factory in Elgin, IL during World War II. She returned home to Jasper County and married Leo Deimel on December 2, 1943. She and Leo owned and operated their farm southwest of Bogota for over 30 years before selling the farm and moving to Newton. Marie began working as a certified nurse's aide at Newton Rest Haven Nursing Home in 1967. She retired from Newton Rest Haven after 18 years of providing loving care to the residents. She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic church and served on various committees. She also belonged to the Women of the Moose and the Eagles.
Quilting, gardening, canning and growing flowers were among her many interests. Marie seldom sat down without a crochet hook and thread in her hands. She won prizes at the Jasper County Fair with her crocheted entries. She donated her hand crafted items to St. Thomas Church for their fund raising events as well as giving many beautiful doilies, tablecloths, baby items and other projects as gifts to friends and family. Due to declining health, Marie moved to Springfield, IL in March 2002 to live with her niece/foster daughter, Sharon Goretzke and Sharon's husband Raoul. She spent her final years surrounded by the love of her family.
Although Leo and Marie had no children of their own, they provided much love and support to their many nieces and nephews over the years. In May of 1959, they welcomed their niece Sharon "Sherrie" Rogers into their home as a foster daughter.
Her husband Leo preceded Marie in death on November 14, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Dorothy Schammerhorn, Frankie Merreighn and Freda Cornwell. She is survived by her foster daughter, Sharon Goretzke, and several nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed and will continue to live on in our hearts forever.
