Paul Melvin Adkins, age 95
Of Newton, IL passed away at 7:20 PM – Sunday, February 5, 2012 at Newton Rest Haven in Newton, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM – Friday, February 10, 2012 at the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL with Bro. Tom Matson officiating. Burial will be in the Brick Cemetery in rural Newton, IL with full military rites by the Jasper Post #20 American Legion. Visitation will be held 5:00 -7:00 PM – Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the funeral home. In loving memory of Paul, memorials may be made to Pinehaven Children's Home. Paul was born on May 21, 1916 in Jasper County, IL the son of Wade and Lissa (Gosnell) Adkins. He married Fern Eveland on January 9, 1943. They had two sons, Stephen and Stu Adkins. On February 4, 1959 he married Ruth Stone McLouth. They raised four sons Tim McLouth; Alan McLouth Randy Adkins and Dan Adkins. Paul graduated from Newton Community High School. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII. After being discharged from the service Paul farmed in Jasper County north of Newton, IL. He was a better than average pitcher which led to a job offer from Caterpillar Company so that he could play on the baseball team for Caterpillar, Inc. Paul moved to Peoria and worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 30 years and retired in 1975 from the quality assurance department as an inspector.
Paul was a member of the Newton Southern Baptist Church and the Jasper Post #20 American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, tinkering and having pets.
Paul is survived by his wife of 52 years Ruth Adkins of Newton, IL. 4 children Stephen (Lori) Adkins of Apple Creek, OH and Stu (Shirley) Adkins of Pellston, MI; Tim McLouth of North Pekin, IL; Alan (Cindy) McLouth of Pekin, IL; Randy (Sharon) Adkins of Hutsonville, IL and Dan (Shanna) Adkins of Wheeler, IL. Sister Lissa Tate of Newton, IL and a brother Dale Adkins of Murphysboro, IL. 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
