Richard Duane Poe, age 80, of Shelbyville, Illinois, and formerly of Dieterich, Illinois, passed away at 9:59 PM – Saturday, July 19, 2025, at HSHS Saint John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, with his family by his side.
A service honoring Richard's life will be at 3:00 PM - Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Meyer Funeral Home, 307 East Center Street Dieterich, Illinois. The burial will be in the Dieterich Village Cemetery in Dieterich, Illinois. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 PM prior to the service. Richard was born on February 17, 1945, in Effingham, Illinois, the son of Berlyn and Violet (Fitzgerald) Poe. He graduated from Dieterich High School with the Class of 1962. While in high school he ran for the Dieterich cross country team.
Richard worked at Siemer's Mill and Effingham Equity for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing and listening to music. He was baptized on August 21, 2005, and joined the Dieterich Christian Church.
Richard is survived by:
Children – Julie Poe (special friend Randy Grubaugh) of Shumway, Illinois; Tracy Gathe of Shelbyville, Illinois; and Theron Poe of Gilbert, Arizona
Grandchildren – Caleb (Colby) Poe, Desiree Yeager, Tisha Niebrugge, Amanda (Lee) Schaufler, Damion (Felicia) King, Ashton Pietzman, and Myah Gathe
17 Great Grandchildren
Siblings – Robert (Janet) Poe of Teutopolis, Illinois; Michael (Judy) Poe of Effingham, Illinois; Terry (Susan) Poe of Effingham, Illinois; and Violet Backs of Altamont, Illinois
Special Friend and Companion – Juanita Musson of Shelbyville, Illinois
Son-in-law – David Jones of Newton, Illinois
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Melissa Jones, brother Edward Poe and a sister Brenda McKinney.
