Virgil H. Gentry

July 18, 1922 - May 23, 2025

Virgil H. Gentry, age 102, of Greenup, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 3:53 PM- Friday, May 23, 2025, surrounded by his family at Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital in Mattoon, Illinois.

Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 PM- Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the Meyer Funeral Home-Bishop Chapel in Greenup, Illinois.  Visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00 PM (1 hour) prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

The burial will be in the Jewett Cemetery in Jewett, Illinois.  In loving memory of Virgil, memorials may be made to Jewett Community Church.  The obituary can be viewed and condolences left at www.meyerfh.com

Virgil was born on July 18, 1922, in Gilman Illinois, the son of Glen and Verna (Kingery).  He married Louise Farris on March 8, 1943, and she preceded him in passing on July 10, 1989.

Virgil was a World War II Veteran serving from December 3, 1942-November 3, 1945, Gilbert Island.  He earned 4 Overseas Service Bars, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 1 bronze battle star and the Good Conduct Medal.

He attended Jewett Community Church.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing slot machines and he loved cherry cheesecake.

Surviving are his children, Vicky Callahan, Bill (Judy) Gentry, Robert (Pat) Gentry, Steven (Roxie) Gentry, Brenda (Bob) Carlton, sister Linda Schrock.  Virgil and Louise were blessed with 14 grandchildren, 31 great grandkids and 25 great great-grandkids.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, son in law Lynn Callahan, 1 granddaughter, 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
