Wendel Harmon Jones, age 91

Of Newton, Illinois passed away at 4:08 PM - Monday, December 1, 2014 at

Evergreen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Effingham, Illinois.

Private funeral services will be held. The Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois is assisting the family with arrangements.

Wendel Harmon was born on April 14, 1923 in Willow Hill, Illinois the son of

Otto Wilbur and Anna Virginia (Hornbaker) Jones.

He was raised on a small farm in Jasper County, Illinois and attended school in Willow Hill, Illinois.

He served in the Citizens Military Training Corp in 1940 and entered the Civilian Conservation Core while there. In January 1941 he joined the United States Navy and served 6 years. During a train layover he met Esther Niemi and 3 days later they married in Reno, Nevada. She and Wendel spent 65+ Years together as husband and wife, best friends and life partners. She preceded him in death on June 24, 2014. Wendel worked for many years a Master Carpenter until retirement.

Wendel is survived by-

Daughter- Virginia Lee "Jenny" Brown of Sacramento, California

3 Grandchildren- Ellen Lee (Jason) Gillikin,

Charles Lane (Christina) Powell III

Maxwell John (Josette) Powell

6 Great-grandchildren- Independence Lucille Gillikin, Charles Lane Powell IV, Cameron Powell, Alexander Powell, Marissa Wallig and Austin Wallig

2 Siblings- Don (Peggy) Jones and Vera Lou Huddleston

Several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Wendel was preceded in death by his parents, wife Esther Jones, great grand-daughter Hannah Loy, and siblings Rachel Jones, Ada Mae Moran, Thelma Irene Hickey and James Robert Jones.
