Meyer Funeral Homes- Newton

Family Owned and Operated - Jason and Lisa Meyer

The Meyer Funeral Home, located at 307 West Jourdan Street in Newton, IL, has been serving Jasper County in the same location since 1931. The business was originated by George Markwell on the square in Newton sometime during the 1910s or 1920s. In 1931, his son Louis Markwell purchased the former Laugel Family Home, which was built in 1894 and converted it into the Markwell Funeral Home.
Mr. Markwell operated the business until 1941 when he sold the business to Dean Parker. Mr. Parker operated the business until 1959 when he sold it to a funeral director named Jim Flagg. Mr. Flagg operated the business until 1969 when he sold it to Jim Buchanan of Robinson, Illinois. In that same year, the Buchanan Family hired a funeral director from Effingham, Illinois named Darrel Holland who had been employed at Bauer Funeral Home. Mr. Holland and his wife Ruth managed the Buchanan Funeral Home until their retirement in 1985. In 1987, the business was sold to Ronald and Ann Blake of Greenup, Illinois, the owners of the Bishop Funeral Home. In December of 1994, the Blake’s hired a young funeral director named Jason F. Meyer from Southern Illinois to assist them. In 1999, Jason became the resident manager. Jason and his wife Lisa purchased the business on April 14, 2014.
